Our Vision
We envision a Kenya where every student can study and thrive without the barriers of energy poverty. In many rural areas, the lack of electricity limits students' ability to study after sunset, impacting their education and future opportunities.
How It All Began
Illuminate Horizons was inspired by the personal stories and experiences of its founders, first-generation immigrants who grew up hearing about the challenges their parents faced in rural Kenya without electricity. Their parents often recounted the struggles of studying by dim and hazardous kerosene lamps, which emitted toxic smoke and posed risks of fire accidents.
As the founders grew older, they had the opportunity to visit Kenya and witnessed firsthand the disparities between children in urban areas with access to electricity and those in rural areas who continued to study in darkness. These visits reinforced the harsh reality of energy poverty and the barriers it creates for education and opportunity.
Motivated by these experiences, the founders created Illuminate Horizons to address this inequity. By providing clean, safe, and sustainable energy through solar lamps, the organization empowers students in rural Kenya to unlock their full academic potential and dream of a brighter future.
